Chocolate cinnamon rolls: the ultimate luxuriously decadent breakfast roll

How to make chocolate cinnamon rolls

For the dough

Step 1
Pour the warm milk and yeast into a bowl.

Add 2 tablespoons of sugar.

Combine and let stand for 5 to 10 minutes, until foamy.

Add the remaining sugar, eggs and salt to the yeast mixture.

Pour in the melted butter.

Add 1 cup flour and mix on medium speed for 1 minute.

Add 3 cups flour and mix on low speed for a few minutes until the dough becomes soft and slightly sticky and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Mix for another 3 minutes.

Cover with plastic wrap.

Let rest in a warm, draft-free place for 2 hours or until doubled in volume.

Spray a baking dish with cooking spray. Turn the dough out onto a clean work surface. Roll it out into a 10×16 inch rectangle.
For the filling

Mix butter, sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla and cinnamon in a bowl until smooth.

Spread the butter mixture over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border.

Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the butter mixture.

Roll the rectangle tightly into a cylinder.

Cut into 9 rolls.

Cover with cling film and let rise for 1 hour until the dough has doubled in size.

Prepare the icing and serve the chocolate cinnamon rolls

While the rolls are cooling, heat the heavy cream in the microwave for 15 to 30 seconds, or until hot. Mix in the espresso powder, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Whisk until smooth.
