I make grandma’s poppy seed cake at least once a month

Ingredients:

250 g poppy seeds
250 ml milk
250 g soft butter
250 g sugar
4 eggs
1 pinch of salt

1 teaspoon lemon peel (grated)
300 g flour
1 packet of baking powder
Icing sugar for sprinkling

Step-by-step instructions:

Step 1: Preparing the poppy seeds Lightly roast the poppy seeds in a pan without adding fat until an intense aroma is released. Then finely grind the roasted poppy seeds. Mix the ground poppy seeds in a bowl with warm milk and let them soak for about 30 minutes.

Step 2: Preparing the dough In a separate bowl, mix the softened butter with the sugar until fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time and stir well. Add a pinch of salt and the grated lemon peel and mix well again.

Step 3: Add poppy seed mixture Stir the swollen poppy seeds into the butter-sugar mixture. Mix the flour with the baking powder and gradually add to the poppy seed mixture. Mix everything into a smooth dough.

Step 4: Baking the poppy seed cake Pour the dough into a well-greased and floured cake pan. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 50-60 minutes until the cake is golden brown and baked through. Make sure you do the stick test to check doneness.

Step 5: Let it cool and sprinkle. After baking, take the poppy seed cake out of the oven and let it cool in the tin. Once the cake has cooled, sprinkle generously with powdered sugar.
