Sausage savory pies: the delicious and easy to prepare rustic ones!

Looking for an easy appetizer that requires almost no effort? Then these hearty sausage tarts are just the thing for you. Made with puff pastry (one of the most versatile items in your freezer), frankfurters, cheese and tomato paste, it tastes like a slice of pizza in every bite! Not only are they crunchy and full of
flavor, but they’re also easy to adapt to whatever ingredients you have on hand. Because you can serve them as snacks or appetizers, they are perfect for parties, picnics, and potlucks. And if there are any leftovers, they freeze very well. So what are you waiting for? Let’s begin!
Sausage pizza variations
If you want to add your own twist to these savory pies, you can substitute other ingredients for the sausage and cheese. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
roasted red pepper (chopped) and cream cheese
Spinach and feta
smoked chicken and feta
Tuna and roasted red peppers
This recipe can be used with other ingredients like smoked chicken, grilled chicken, grilled pork, and even cooked ground beef!
For a sweet twist, spread the bottom layer with a chocolate spread (or a hazelnut spread like Nutella) and top with banana slices!
Tips
The puff pastry should be completely thawed so that it is pliable enough to roll out, but still cold. It’s best to let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight rather than leaving it on the kitchen counter at room temperature. If the puff pastry is too warm, it will not rise sufficiently.
The oven should be hot (preheated to 180°). If you notice that the dough pieces are browning too quickly (before the cheese begins to melt), you can loosely place a sheet of foil on top.
How to store savory sausage pies
Store the sausage pizzas in an airtight container (in the refrigerator) for up to 2 days. Reheat the pastry in the oven to crisp it up again.
Can you freeze savory sausage cakes?
Yes, the baked puff pastry squares can be frozen for up to 3 months. Allow the dough squares to cool completely, then wrap them in plastic wrap. Place the wrapped puff pastry squares in a freezer bag to freeze.
