Pain au Chocolat: the delicious and fragrant recipe for the typical French breakfast sweet

Pain au chocolat, literally “chocolate bread”, is a typical French dessert similar to Italian coccottini. These are soft, flaky brioches made from the same dough as croissants and filled with two chocolate sticks. Ideal for breakfast, it is a truly delicious square dessert made from semi-sweet puff pastry, just like the typical Viennese boulangerie.
Preparing the pain au chocolat could be a bit laborious and time-consuming, for this reason we decided to shorten the time by using a ready-made puff pastry.
However, you can also prepare the recipe from scratch with your own hands, starting with homemade puff pastry. Then you have to cut out small rectangles, place two chocolate bars on each and roll everything up before putting the sweets in the oven.
The end result will be a delicious and fragrant pain au chocolat: the outer crust will be slightly crunchy, while the soft inside will perfectly show off the layers of dough.
If you decide to prepare these buns from dough, you will have to let them rise for a few hours before baking. It is also possible to freeze them before this final leavening to always have them on hand.
