Berlingozzo is a donut-shaped sideboard dessert, typical of Tuscan cuisine, traditionally prepared for Carnival . It is a type of donut made with simple ingredients such as brigidini – eggs, sugar, flour and oil. The result is a firm but at the same time very soft consistency and has a pleasant aroma of lemon and orange.
Berlingozzo has very ancient origins and seems to have been prepared as early as the 15th century, on Shrove Thursday. Its name seems to derive from the verb berlingare , which in Tuscan jargon means “to have fun” and “to have fun at the table”.
This authentic and easy-to-prepare doughnut is perfect for breakfast and as a snack , accompanied by an espresso, a cup of hot tea or freshly squeezed orange juice.
The absence of milk and butter makes it suitable even for those who are intolerant to dairy products or who want to enjoy a lighter but equally irresistible dessert.
What distinguishes Berlingozzo is its colorful and festive appearance, which will especially delight the little ones in the house: this is due to a rich covering of crumbles and colored sprinkles that are applied after cooking by sprinkling the dessert with a veil of orange syrup or orange jam.
