The orange upside down cake is a simple and spectacular sideboard dessert , a variation of the classic orange cake. The soft base has an irresistible caramelized surface, created by placing orange slices, butter and sugar on the bottom of the mold.
With its pleasantly juicy consistency, it is ideal as a happy ending to the meal or as a tasty snack accompanied by a steaming infusion or a cup of espresso.
To prepare it, simply place a sheet of baking paper in a 22 cm springform pan, spread with melted butter, sprinkle with sugar and arrange the orange slices on top. Pour over the dough made by mixing the eggs with sugar, flour, yeast and juice and grated orange peel and bake in the oven at 180 °C for about 45 minutes.
Once the cake is ready, all you have to do is turn it out onto a serving plate and carefully remove the baking paper: the result is a soft and fragrant dessert, also perfect for a birthday or a festive occasion.
It can be kept under a glass dome for several days and can also be wrapped a few hours in advance: the resting period allows the aromas to intensify even more.
We recommend that you choose organic oranges with edible peel and not chemically treated; among the best are the Tarocco and the red ones from Sicily, with sugary, juicy and seedless pulp.
To taste, you can refine the dough with chocolate chips, almond flakes or add the spices and flavors you prefer, such as cinnamon, vanilla or cardamom.
